As my bio says..Writer, Broadcaster, Blogger, Occasional Stand up...Regular Sit Down
I have been a success, I have been a failure.. A husband, a father, a man. I've pretty much been crap at all of them. I've had scrapes, I am definitely no angel, I have hurt so many people, but I've also loved many.
It took me a long time to realise that my actions and deeds were mostly motivated by one thing, that evil little dark pal of mine, depression.
Women and Men react differently to the condition, within this Blog you'll see how we differ. I was in my fifties when I was diagnosed and finally received help. I'm not cured, and well never be BUT, I now realise what my personal triggers are and am able to recognise when an attack is happening.
I found solace in writing...at first just scribbling down thoughts in order (ever practical as a man) to try and provide a baseline that I could refer back to to see if I had improved or...not. I joined a writing group to try and improve my ramblings. I spoke to a published author who told me the 'secret' of writing...and a flood gate opened. I am now three books down within a year, with two more on the way. Several pieces of my work have been made into radio plays and audio books. I have spoken to groups who support people with mental health problems and have shared my story.
I have tried to make amends for my past, it turns out that my historical actions were typical of many men with this affliction. I waited a long time to get help, I assumed I was to blame for everything. I am of course guilty but, and here's the but, there is help out there if you want it.
I want this Blog to highlight how men suffer, mostly in silence, if I can help one person then it's worthwhile.
